Sad Smiles
The famine had eaten up the
land,
Both the old and the young
were not spared;
Not a single animal to be
reared,
Only the carcasses lying on
the sand
The older
men could be seen smiling,
A closer
look however revealed deep sadness;
The younger
men spent all day railing,
Who could
possibly pacify their bitterness?
Everyone
begged the heavens for rain,
It rained
and rained. Flooding was imminent;
This was
indeed another pain,
This placed
everyone in utter amazement.
The elders
gathered to discuss,
“Where did
we go wrong?” was the discourse;
Soul and
heart searching was sure in play,
“Let’s
plead for mercy!” a frail voice held sway.
Everything
good was now restored,
Animals
reared, trees grew, grasses pastured;
The old men
looked back and were sad,
The young men
looked at the future and smiled.
